Module 1Map: billing hierarchy, tagging, and cost analysis
FinOps framework and the Inform, Optimize, Operate phases applied to Azure. Billing model: contracts, management groups, subscriptions, resource groups, and cost scopes. Designing a hierarchy that reflects the organization and enables actionable allocation. Azure Cost Management: dimensional analysis, filters, granularity, saved views. Scheduled exports to a storage account and downstream consumption. Tagging taxonomy: conventions, inheritance, enforcement via Azure Policy, coverage measurement, and remediation of untagged resources. Azure Advisor: critical review of cost recommendations. Workshop: produce a breakdown of spend by team and environment from a real export.
Module 2Optimize: cleanup, right-sizing, commitments, and AKS
Three-step method: clean up, right-size, then commit. Detecting unused resources: detached disks, reserved public IPs, gateways, stopped-but-billed instances. Right-sizing VMs using utilization metrics, VM families, and performance/cost trade-offs. Storage: access tiers, lifecycle policies, redundancy, and cost-effective retention for Log Analytics and tables. Commitments: reservations vs. savings plans, scope, exchange and cancellation, hybrid benefit for owned licenses. Method for sizing commitments against baseline consumption. AKS: node pools by workload profile, spot pools for batch jobs, scheduled shutdown of non-production clusters, control plane tiers. Workshop: build a justified and quantified commitment plan.
Module 3Govern: budgets, anomalies, showback, and steering
Azure budgets: scopes, thresholds, automated actions, and limitations. Anomaly alerts: configuration, handling false positives, assignment to a named owner. Showback and chargeback: conditions for indisputable allocation, handling shared costs and negotiated discounts. Unit cost: building a business KPI and correlating cost data with usage data. Governance policies: restricting VM SKUs, allowed regions, mandatory tags, guardrails applied at deployment. Integration into the lifecycle: cost estimation in architecture reviews, controls in the deployment pipeline. Steering ritual: format, participants, KPIs. Final workshop: quantified, prioritized reduction plan with owners and timeline.
